What is “Pay Per Click” Advertising?
Pay Per Click, commonly known as PPC Advertising, is a form of online advertising where advertisers pay only when a user actually clicks on a link to visit their website. Advertisers bid on keywords they think their target market will be using to find their product/service and their ads are displayed for these searches. Advertisers also have the option of having their ads displayed on web pages with relevant content. These links are often called “sponsored links”.
The largest and most popular pay-per-click programs are Google Adwords and Yahoo! Search Marketing. As mentioned earlier, firstly an advertiser must select if they would like their ads displayed in search engine results (keyword), related websites (content) or both. The advertiser then selects a “bid amount” which is used in part, to determine in which order ads are shown on the website or search results page. Users can also select a specific geographic region for their campaign, meaning ads will only be displayed to users in a region or country the advertiser selects.
Pay-Per-Click is an extremely effective advertising medium for small and medium business as they only have to pay for genuine visitors to their website. Instead of waiting months for search engine inclusion, small businesses can now achieve instant search engine exposure and only pay for actual visitors to their website. Local businesses also have the option of targeting a specific geographic region, to ensure they only receive enquiries and sales from area’s they service.
